Mark Almond, lecturer in modern history at Oriel College Oxford appeared at a rapidly convened anti-war neeting on London on 14th August and delivered this perceptive and highly amusing analysis of the situation in the Caucasus. I found his approach refreshing and insightful primarily due to his close familiarity with Georgia and the region derived from the fact that he has visited Georgia as a human rights observer no less than 9 times since the early 1990's.
I hope readers of Unrepentant Communist, which has now been online for over a year, will enjoy this clip as much as I did.

Mark Almond, of course, is not Communist. He is what Bernard Crick, in his biography of Orwell call 'that rare bird, a Tory anti-imperialist'.
Almond admires Johnathan Swift and destest rationalistic hubris and Utopian ideologies that ignore the reality and try to fit the lives of people around plans that appear good on paper.
If you read his book Uprising or much of what he writes it should be clear that he thinks all revolutions are doomed to failure and are led by fanatics who seize control of them and plunge nations into bloodshed and mass murder.
Almond dislikes the current wave of NATO expansion and 'democratic geopolitics'.
He thinks the political classes at this moment have become imbued with fantastical and messianic ideas of 'regime change' that have the interests of the people only as a secondary consideration to the more important one of consolidating control over their economies, profiting from privatisation of national assets and furthering the geopolitical strategy of controlling the oil,gas and pipeline routes of Central Asia.
Almond's views co-incide with those on the left but he tends to believe that NATO and 'the West' is paradoxically mirroring those Communists who also believed that national self determination and democracy are fine only if they co-incide with the interests of the larger powers, i.e the Leninists who saw the USSR as the salvation of all mankind.
